The term beauty school is one that is usually referring to the school that teaches hair dressing skills.  This is also called cosmetology.  The process of learning how to design, cut, color and style hair is cosmetology and is what is taught in a beauty school.  It is one of the most sought after careers because a good quality cosmetologist can make quite a bit of money in this career.  The school’s goal is to provide necessary instruction on how to perform the necessary steps.

The fundamentals of cosmetology are taught first.  This will include such things as the body’s structure, bone structure as well as skin conditions.  The basics of how hair grows are also explained.  Once students master the book learning aspects of the trade, they will move on to the more complex objectives of actually styling hair. 

Students will first work on plastic ‘heads’ which allow them to make their first cuts and coloring projects less detrimental if they do not go right.  They often spend a number of hours working on dummies before moving on to real people.  In beauty school they may also learn things such as eye brow shaping and waxing, waxing hair, as well as manicure and pedicure processes.  Not all students will learn these things, just those that plan to use them in their beauty business later on.

In most cases, students that attend a beauty school will then be able to begin providing their services to real people.  Usually the beauty school will feature a place where customers can come to get their hair needs met for a much lower than normal price.  They will do this because the students are not licensed to perform paid for hair cuts.  The students are monitored by licensed cosmetologists, usually quite closely.  The students do not receive compensation, except in the way of tips, for their services.  They get the experience that they need to become licensees.

In most beauty schools, the students will need to learn a great deal before they can be licensed.  Once the student has completed the required number of hours, they will then be able to take their licensing exam. Each state has their own requirements for these testing so you will need to check your state’s protocol for the policies that are needed.  From here, the student will either pass and apply to work in a salon, or they will go back and study an additional amount of hours to retake the test.  Beauty school is a way to begging a career in the art of designing hair.
