"I've tried all different kinds and brands of creams, masks, and serums. The type product I've personally found most effective for immediate and noticeable improvement of skin's overall appearance is microdermabrasion and/or chemical peel/masks (the at-home version, I've never tried salon/clinic versions). They are no "miracle cure" but will definitely diminish acne or chicken pox scars, as well as age spots/freckles, rough patches, fine wrinkles, enlarged pores, and makes skin just feel and look smoother. You use them once a week or so, and you should see some immediate improvement, then more each time you use it. Use at night before going to bed (not in the morning before exposing tender "new" skin to the sun and pollutants), and please, follow instructions carefully, follow up with a good nourishing night cream (preferably the same brand, specially formulated to follow the treatment), take precautions to use sunscreen, and do not use within 24 hours of using any other exfoliant (like face scrubs, alpha hydroxy acid, or retinol type products, as they may cause peeling and irritation).I use mine once a week, and sometimes switch off with the chemical peel/mask. The microderm is a super-fine grit scrub, and can be used with an applicator buffing pad gadget, or the fingertips. The Chemical peel is a serum applied to the face, then a mask (very "glue" like) is applied, left to dry for about 10-15 minutes, then peeled off (it sticks to the skin and all the fine hairs on your face and hurts a little). I keep the microderm scrub in the shower and it takes about 1 minute to scrub my face & neck. It's a quick one step process, and just more convenient than the peel. I use a highly rated brand by Beauti Control ($50 for about 15-20 applications for microderm, and $40 for 8-10 applications of the the chem peel/mask), but there are several more affordable brands available at most drug stores, if you want to give them a try.
