Beautyflow.com sparklymooy"I am a college student, and I just joined the Student Government body at school. The guys wear slacks and polo shirts, and the girls wear skirts or nice pants, so I want to dress up too. I am a jeans/t-shirt/Birkenstocks (which are getting really ratty) girl on weekdays, but I dress really nicely for church. However, I am joining this as an art student, so I want to be able to show my quirkiness, which would be expected, yet still look "professional". I guess the look I am going for is dressy Anthropologie. However, I have a lot of short sleeves and fluttery skirts, which will not keep me warm on my walk across campus. I don't like leggings or slacks, so what would you suggest I wear? Would turtlenecks be appropriate? Blouses? Sweaters? What kind of pants? Also, what kind of shoes? I have some fun edgy earrings, which I am willing to wear a conservative outfit with funky jewelry. Also, stores in the Atlanta area where I can get outfits for under 30 dollars would be greatly appreciated.

"What is the tone of your college? Conservative? Cosmopolitan? I've seen Glamour (an excellent magazine for college students) where chunky sweaters are layered over fluttery skirts. It's a different look, but I think it would be cute for someone young. Denim jackets are a good item, and you can put some pretty, vintage pins all over the front, or whatever your style is. You could also layer with a long, cashmere-type scarf, or for lighter days, a pashmina shawl, either solid or a pretty, Indian print. I love Atlanta, but haven't been there in years. Do they still have Underground? When I was there, they had really neat shops, which would fit your individuality. Winter white pants would be a good choice, a little different from the standard black. As for leggings, I would go with tights. They're comnfortable and warm. Shoes...I LOVE shoes. I really like Birkenstocks, but wear Dansko and Born. I really like the Dansko "dress" shoes, chunky heel (usually wedge) with a Mary-Jane style. I would get a wine or burgundy color. They look cute with skirts, dresses, and equally at home with pants or jeans. You have so many options, to look feminine, and still retain an artistic flair. I would recommend a bag from Mark (division of Avon). They have the neatest, slouchy type bags, and a grey, velvet purse, very lady-like, but with a vintage flair. The most expensive one is under 35.00.If money is tight, I go to flea markets or thrift stores. I like to shop where the area is upscale, I've found expensive bags and clothes for a song. Oh, with the skirt, you could wear a twin-set or slim turtleneck and set it off with a narrow, patent-leather belt. Also, ballerina flats would be so cute. As you cantell, I love trying to come up with different looks. Have fun in Atlanta!

"Thanks for the tips, especially the one about Glamour. My campus bookstore carries it, so I will have to check it out. Yes, we still have the Underground, and from my understanding, it has had a renaissance. I would say my college is Cosmopolitan, we have a very diverse sense of style. I attended my first SG meeting today, which very well. One more until I am appointed! Another question, though. Once a month we will be meeting with our college president, and for those meetings, we are required to wear business casual. I a willing to go very conservative in respect for the president, but I don't know what the term business casual means. Would the above suggestions fit that term?

"For business casual I would mix a blazer or nice, fitted or semi-fitted jacket, with khakis, corduroy, or dark-rinsed jeans (without any distressed look), and a pair of mules or clogs. No athletic shoes. A nice turtleneck or v-neck tee-shirt (all under jacket), and a nice scarf, iether around the neck, or hanging long and loose. Or an interesting necklace or brooch. Definitely a nice bag, not too big and slouchy, preferably a smaller wallet-style that has a should-strap.Again, definitely the jacket. It ties everything together, and it is so versatile. Congratulations on your appointment in the very near future! Good luck!

"Think contrast. If you wear artsy peices, keep it to an accessory or two, or one piece of clothing. If your fluttery skirts are dark enough for winter, then wear warm, tall boots and a pair of long underwear or tights underneath the skirt for warmth, with a simple turtleneck and heavy, but simple blazer, and really interesting earrings or pins on the jacket. If you want to wear colorful artsy sweaters, tops, or jackets, then go with plainer pants and shoes. Nice jeans or khakis go with everything and are comfortable, and they can be worn with low to medium heeled boots, clogs, mules, or flats. For business casual, I'd suggest dark, conservative colors (black, gray, navy, tan, brown) in either matching or coordinating pieces; slacks or skirt, blazer, a simple sweater or blouse, sensible (but not frumpy) shoes and bag, and understated on the jewelry/accessories.

"I have a grey skirt, a brown skirt, and a black skirt. I want to buy only one pair of pumps, but I don't know what will co-ordinate with all three of those colors. What do you suggest? I was thinking of a subdued metalic like bronze, but is that too trendy-will it go out of style before my shoes wear out?

"If I had to pick one color for shoes, it would be black. It obviously goes with black and gray, and if you wear black shoes with brown, just add a little more black and brown/tan (or cream/beige) elsewhere, in a top, scarf, belt, vest, etc... for an overall black/brown/tan ensemble. I like the bronzes, but yes, they are a trend not a classic, and would probably look "off" with gray and black.

"Invest in the black pair, but for fun, buy an inexpensive of brozne ballet flats. At Payless, Target, WalMart. I shop for "fashion trends" there, and don't feel guilty when the trend is over.
