Any Tips for African-American Relaxed Hair? > - Beauty and Fashion >
Beautyflow.com tweetyj"Hi all, I am an African-American woman with thick, relaxed hair. My problem is that while the scalp of my hair gets really straight during relaxing, my ends are ALWAYS frizzy and dry. I read that you are not supposed to put relaxer on the ends of your hair, so I don't, but there's got to be a way to tame my dry and damaged ends. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks!

What do you do to your hair post-relaxer? What kind of condition is your hair in? Do you get your ends trimmed regularly?

"Lately, I've been using the Pantene products designed for women of color. So, I give my hair another shampoo and I use their deep conditioner. I read somewhere that you are supposed to blow dry your hair while it's still wet, so I try to blow dry immediately. I do get my ends trimmed about once a month. I think I might have to surrender and come up with the money to go to a salon every month.

Try wrapping your hair while it is wet with a leave-in conditioner like In-Motions (its clear and pumps out foamy). Get under the dryer and use a ceramic flat-iron to tame it. Also try Qhemet olive oil heavy cream to keep your hair moisturized. I also like the Pantene-moisturizer.

to get my ends together I use a homemade combo of extra virgin olive oil and motions moisturizing lotions. and wrap your hair at night to keep from using too much heat. and make sure you're getting your ends trimmed at least 1 time a month!!!

"For those of you who like to keep hair moist, I suggest that you use a satin hair pillow by divinesatinhairpillow.com It works really well to maintain the moisture in your hair and control frizzy.

"You need to keep your ends cut that frizzy hair is damaged ends that need to be taken off. If you get it cut by the right person you will notice a tremendous change in how your hair handles. I suggest you try a fantastic sams or someplace like that where all they do is cut they do have black stylist at these places, but you will be surprised even the white ones can give you a good cut. Just don't expect them to know how to style it. (Go to your normal stylist for that). Give it a try I decided to go to a fantastic sams about two years ago and I have went to my stylist once since. The cut I got was so well done that my hair falls in the style and I don't need to get it done so often. It grows better and it is so less expensive $12 every six months for the cut and my perms cost me about $50 a year because I do it myself. My hair has never been in such great shape.

"as a matter of fact you should cut your ends every month so that your hair will stay the way that you want it. I should know my daughters hair are all different types. You should also try a good leave in conditioner, like for example carols daughter from sephora it is amazing and her products are great. But remember to keep your ends trimmed and your hair will also grow better too.

I usually wrap my hair and use an over the head hair dryer my hair is also very thick and it takes a long time but the results are worh it. Do get your ends trimmed and make sure to cover your hair at night. Also a good flat iron will help at least 3 times a week.

Hi I have very soft hair. After shampooing my hair its curly so i blow dry it straight. When i don't blow it straight I wear a roller wrap. My question is what are some things I can do for other styling options? The thought of rain or even humidity makes my hair frizz. If I choose to stay curly what can I do?

You can do it every 2 week but keep your ends cut

Defiantly keep your ends trimmed. I believe your hair changes conditions throughout your life. Just be sure to treat it gently. Don't over wash your hair. Once a week is good enough. If need be use a leave in conditioner. Use moisturizers not grease. It just weighs down your hair and clog your pores. Eat healthy and drink lots of water. I also try to switch up my hair products after a while. I like Garnier Frutics Sleek and Shine line. It seems to detangle more than Pantene. Frizz Ease helps. If your ends are Always frizzy and dry go to your salon get a deep conditioning treatment. Also have her cut a little more off your ends off. She may not be cutting all of your split ends off. They will just continue to split if she does not do this.

"I try to avoid using the blow dryer and the flat iron in the same day if I can. Even though my hair is relaxed it still tends to air dry wavy, so I just let it do that. Then, the next morning I will use my chi flat iron to make it smooth or flippy or however I want it done. I try to keep my hair trimmed and use a Paul Mitchell "the conditioner" leave in conditioner after I shampoo to make sure I leave in as much moisture as possible.

"Well make sure you relax your hair on a regular basis, not too often but don't let your hair get out of control. Make sure you're using the right relaxer for your hair also. I use Pantene ProV for African American Hair but they also make for for African Americans with dry damaged hair, try that. It works great. Conditioning is key. I also use Dr. Miracles Temple and Nape Balm (his products are GREAT! you can get them from Wal-Mart!) Also try "wrapping" your hair at night. Brushing into a circular motion around your head, and sleep in a silk or satin scarf NO cotton! See if that helps!

Oh I forgot this but also try roller sets. They tend to not dry out your hair as much as blow drying. I have a pretty nice grade of hair but blow drying reeks complete havoc on the hair. It breaks the hair follicle down only making them more dry and brittle. Definitely try roller sets they look nice afterwards and get your hair straight and add style and body in one motion!
