"Does anyone know any good leg, thigh, glute exercises for people with bad knees?

"Maybe some leg lifts? While lying on your side, propped on your elbow, knees together and slightly bent, raise your top leg, keeping the knee and ankle horizontal. The hip/leg you are lying on and your free arm on top will balance you. You might be able to to "butt lifts", but it might put to much pressure on the knees. Lie on your back, knees bent into an upside-down vee. Keeping your feet firmly on the ground and slightly apart, lift your butt, making a "bridge" with your pelvis. You should feel it in the front of your thighs, the back of your thighs, and a little in your butt. If your knees can handle it, pull your feet up a little closer, and space them a little wider. Go easy until you know if you can handle it. You can either do quick repetitions or do slower reps where you raise and hold for a few seconds. You can also to some backward leg lifts while standing. Brace yourself against a wall, rail, or chair. Stand straight, as if you are at a ballet barre. Lean forward slightly from the waist, keeping your upper back straight. Lift your leg behind you with knee slightly bent. It might feel more comfortable if you turn your foot/leg slightly to the side. Fast or slow reps, whichever works for you. You can also do some to the side for your outer thighs. If that is too hard on your supporting knee, you can try lying face down on the floor and lifting your legs off the floor slightly. I find this a little hard on my lower back. You might also try standing in back of a chair (with a low back), knees slightly bent, and bend down from the waist until your back is horizontal (as if you are bowing), then slowly raise back up while your head looks up slightly. Be careful to stop if it strains your knees or back, and don't crane your neck up too far.If none of these work, you could look into water exercise, it takes a lot of pressure off the joints.*If you have really bad knees, you should probably check with a doctor or professional physical therapist to make sure you don't cause further damage.

Wow! I thank you and my rear end and knees thank you!!

P.S. I am seeing an ortho Dr. and getting the artificial cartlidge injections which helps somewhat but when I work out it still causes a lot of pain. I can't stop working out without completely falling apart so I'll try these exercises you suggested. Thanks again!

Next time you see the doc you might ask him if he thinks those exercises are safe for your knees. I'd feel terrible if it caused you more problems!

I do light Jazzercise up until now and even the light has caused me some pain that doesn't go away unless I just don't work out. The jumping around might be too much for me but the exercises you mention sound pretty gentle. My problem is that I'm used to very hard workouts but the knees just can't take it any more. I will mention them to my Dr. but they sound okay to me. Thanks again!

"Here are a couple of suggestions. Please check these with your doctor too: 1. Lie on your back, legs up, bent at the knees. Then move your feet like you're cycling in the air. Make sure you completely extend the leg. This will work your butt a lot. There are variations: reverse cycling, and moving both legs together. 2. Lie on stomach, with palms on the floor next to ear/shoulder. Lift up each let individually without bending knees as far as it goes, hold for a few seconds and bring down gently. This is also good for your lower back. 3. On your hands and knees, kick back. Again, extend leg fully each time. Do this slowly to feel the muscles working. All these are yoga exercises and should put no stress on your knees. All are meant to be done smoothly and relatively slowly without any jerky movements. You could also consult a yoga/pilates professional and they'd be able to suggest many more exercises. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much AF. I'll try these. Have considered trying pilates and have done yoga in the past. I really liked the yoga but was getting what I wanted at Jazzercise up until now. Maybe I'll revisit yoga and pilates. Thanks both of you!!
